Different type of numbers has been used since from the beginning of human history. Let's look at some of the number systems that have developed in various places of the world.
Roman Numerals
- Originated in ancient Rome
- Numbers in this system are represented by the combination of 7 symbols
- 7 symbols are
I V X L C D M 1 5 10 50 100 500 1000
- A number can be repeated a maximum of 3 times
- The symbols V, L, D are never repeated.
- The symbol I can be subtracted from V and X only
- X can be subtracted from L,C and M only
Numerals of the same values are added
Example
III=1+1+1=3
XX=10+10=20
MM=1000+1000=2000
A symbol of smaller value put on the right of greater value symbol is added to it

Indo- Arabian Number System
- Number system based on 10
- The most common system for the symbolic representation of numbers in the world
- Also known as a positional decimal numeral system
Binary number system
- System employing 2 as base
- The binary number made up of only 0s and 1s
- The Digital system uses binary numbers
- Scholar Pingala used the binary system first for describing prosody.
Hexa Decimal Number System
- This system has a base value equal to 16
- Hexadecimal numbers are represented by only 16 numbers. These symbols or values are 0 to 9 and A to F
